Crystal Palace hit by cold reality ahead of January window, Oliver Glasner won’t be happy

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner will not be receiving more backing in the transfer market despite his concerns about his squad.

That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley who has exclusively told Football Insider that Crystal Palace cannot afford to spend as much as the top clubs.

Glasner hit out at the Crystal Palace board for saving money rather than investing in the squad following the Eagles’ 2-1 defeat at home to Man United.

Crystal Palace face losing Glasner with the Austrian’s contract expiring at the end of the season, which could bring to an end a successful spell at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace could sell before they buy in January

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley believes Crystal Palace‘s European uncertainty contributed to their lack of activity in the summer, but he does not expect the club to be much more active in January.

You know, they’re not a club that you would want from a kind of sustainability point of view to be spending hundreds of millions in the transfer market,” Plumley said.

“It is going to be more of the case of, you know, they are an established Premier League club at the minute. They want to keep it that way, of course

If you’re looking at the more high-profile players leaving to generate transfer activity, as we saw in the summer, that might be a part of the discussion that we’re having now about, you know, the reinvestment of that.

And, of course, if you look at the circumstances in and around that time as well, we have to remember that a lot of it was up in the air around the European place, and where they were going to be. So that’s tricky because your budget needs to be set accordingly and your transfer spend should be set accordingly to know where you are playing in the season and not knowing.

And, obviously, the legal repercussions of what was going on would have been tricky as well. So, you know, we understand that managers always want to invest in this squad, and I absolutely get that.

I do think it’s still a case of you will see some probably moving out before some come in. I think the reality in January as well is that the club spend less money generally. That’s just a general trend, and it does then depend on where you are, again, on the pitch

So, you know, of course, they look, again, very well settled in the Premier League. They’re doing okay in Europe. So you might, like, make a push for a couple of players to commit to, you know, to maybe get to the latter stage of the conference league, and that would be very good. So there’s that side of it as well, but I don’t think you would see them spending millions in January.”

Marc Guehi may not be sold in January

Glasner may keep defender Marc Guehi until the end of the season, with his contract also expiring at the end of this campaign.

Guehi does not want to force a move away from Crystal Palace, though the 25-year-old holds plenty of admirers from Premier League and European clubs.

Liverpool are expected to bid again for Guehi in January, with a £35million valuation placed on the England international.
