Crystal Palace: Jaydee Canvot branded a ‘disgrace’ as MOTD issue Leeds red card verdict

Crystal Palace defender Jaydee Canvot has sparked a wave of “fury” following his controversial reaction to Gabriel Gudmundsson’s red card in the 0-0 draw with Leeds United.

The Swede was given his marching orders for a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time, and just moments after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had missed a crucial penalty for the visitors.

The left-back’s pair of cautions came within the space of 22 minutes, but Crystal Palace were ultimately unable to make the man advantage count and secure the victory in the second period.

Oliver Glasner’s side notably failed to record a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes, even though they lined up against 10 men for the entire second half.

MOTD in agreement over Gabriel Gudmundsson red

Gudmundsson’s sending off at Selhurst Park on Sunday was shrouded in confusion as referee Thomas Bramall appeared to momentarily forget that the defender had already been cautioned when he reached to show him a second yellow card.

The former Lille man was handed his second card after sliding in late on Ismaila Sarr in the middle of the pitch, and Bramall seemingly had to be reminded by his fourth official that he would now have to send him off.

The decision prompted a strong reaction from Canvot, who was captured by TV cameras dancing in the background as Gudmundsson received his marching orders.

It was an incident that drew fury from Wayne Rooney during Sunday night’s edition of Match of the Day, as he ripped into the youngster for his actions.

“This is a disgrace,” the former England international said in his analysis of the incident.

“I think to celebrate a player getting a red card, and Canvot doing it like that in his face, that’s wrong.”

Rooney and Micah Richards also stressed that they were in no doubts regarding whether Bramhall took the correct decision to send Gudmundsson off.

“I actually don’t think it is a yellow card,” Rooney continued

“The fact that the referee has forgotten he was already on a card made it a strange situation.”

Richards simply responded by adding “agreed.”

Crystal Palace fans raging over Oliver Glasner

Crystal Palace fans have demanded that Glasner is sacked after their team’s latest frustrating afternoon, as they laboured to a drab stalemate on home turf.

The Leeds draw was the Eagles’ second goalless encounter in a matter of days, after they also drew 0-0 with Cypriot side AEK Larnaca in the first leg of their Last 16 UEFA Conference League tie last Thursday.

Their supporters made their feelings clear on social media once again, as countless fans demanded that Glasner lose his job immediately, amid suggestions that he is “going through the motions” until he leaves at the end of the season.

Palace are surely clear of the drop given that there is still a 10-point cushion between them and the bottom three at the moment, but that has done little to quell the frustration building up in the stands.
