Crystal Palace ‘preparing for bombshell Adam Wharton exit’ amid transfer developments

Crystal Palace are bracing themselves for the departure of Adam Wharton as Oliver Glasner lines up a former Eagle as a replacement.

Manchester United have shown interest in Wharton, whilst Real Madrid have been a “constant presence” at Selhurst Park as they too explore a move for the 21-year-old.

Wharton is a mainstay in the middle of the park for Crystal Palace, starting their first two matches of the Premier League season, and after Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal, it would be another huge blow to Glasner.

Glasner has only signed two new players this summer, as Palace’s transfer plans have been scuppered by a CAS ruling demoting them from the Europa League to the Europa Conference League.

Palace explore Conor Gallagher return

Glasner has a thin squad currently at his disposal and the Austrian manager still has to replace Eze, and captain Marc Guehi is linked to Liverpool.

According to The Athletic [25 August], Crystal Palace are interested in Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher, who previously had a loan spell at the South London club whilst he was at Chelsea.

Gallagher has only been in Spain one season and has been linked with a return to the Premier League, with Aston Villa and Newcastle also possible destinations.

A move for Gallagher, could open the door to Wharton departing, but Glasner should be looking to add to his squad and not just buy players when one leaves.

Gallagher has Premier League experience and is a regular in England squads, the 25-year-old would be a fine addition to the Palace midfield, but he needs to be arriving to strengthen the squad.

Palace defeated Fredrikstad 1-0 in their Europa Conference League first leg play-off match, but without strengthening his squad, the Eagles may struggle in the competition.

The squad is currently weaker without the creativity of Eze, so losing Wharton who dictates the game from deep and is tidy in possession would further deplete the side.

Add in a late Liverpool swoop for Guehi, who Palace do not want to lose on a free next summer then Glanser would have seen his three best players leave.

Palace need to match the ambition of their manager Glasner or be faced with the biggest departure of them all.

Losing three key players and Glasner would leave Palace facing the possibility of a difficult campaign.
