Crystal Palace takeover update as ‘serious financial problems’ emerge

Crystal Palace face an FA Cup final against Man City on Saturday (17 May) but a takeover battle is brewing at Selhurst Park.

According to The Guardian (9 May), John Textor is attempting an audacious takeover at Palace but faces competition from New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.

Textor already owns a 45% stake at Selhurst Park but David Blitzer, Josh Harris and Steve Parish are in control of footballing operations.

The US businessman, who has previously promised to sell his Palace shares, also owns French giants Lyon – who were handed a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 last year (2024) after financial issues reached breaking point.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Textor is “running out of road” financially as he plans another U-turn at Palace.

Textor has ‘serious problems’ ahead of Crystal Palace takeover push, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Textor has “serious problems financially”.

As well as Lyon and Palace, he owns stakes in Brazillian club Botafogo and Belgian side RWD Molenbeek.

Oliver Glasner‘s side sit 12th in the Premier League and could win their first-ever major trophy against City in the FA Cup final.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “John Textor is an enigma.

“He’s late on filing accounts for Eagle Football. Lyon are very concerned about relegation for financial impropriety.

“They don’t believe they will get the money from Textor.

“He’s in a bit of a mess.

“Now we’re talking about Textor trying to take Blitzer’s shares and get control. If he were to get over 80%, that would mean that Steve Parish would be on the way out.

“But Textor, look, I think he’s going to run out of road very soon. I think he’s got some serious problems financially.”

Tottenham ready to launch Eze bid

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (14 May) that Tottenham are ready to launch a bid for Crystal Palace star man Eberechi Eze this summer.

Eze has a £68million release clause in his contract at Selhurst Park but it is believed Tottenham are planning to offer below that figure in initial negotiations.

He is under contract at Crystal Palace until June 2027 and the Eagles were surprised at the lack of interest in the England international last summer (2024).
