Crystal Palace told to match Brighton after ‘losing more players’

Crystal Palace should take inspiration from Premier League rivals Brighton in the transfer market.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Crystal Palace should change their transfer model.

Crystal Palace lost captain Marc Guehi to Man City for £20million earlier in the January window, and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is now being linked with a departure.

Oliver Glasner is stepping down as Crystal Palace manager at the end of the season, with the Austrian citing a lack of investment in the squad as a reason for his exit.

Crystal Palace set for summer ‘rebuild’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – is confident that Crystal Palace will remain in the Premier League next season despite their recent struggles.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the club will strengthen their squad in the summer window.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “As for Palace, they’ve got some issues. When you lose players, and you have a manager that’s unhappy as well, of course you’ve got to try and settle things down.

“But Steve Parish knows that. He’s got Woody Johnson there as well. Look, they’ve got some very good shareholders who are experienced now, and I expect they’ll see some moves in the summer. I think they’ll stay up quite comfortably, and then we’ll see some moves.

“They’re out of the cup, as we know at Macclesfield, and they’ll just have the league to focus on, so I don’t expect any major issues, just a poor season in the league, but a chance to rebuild and replace some of those players they’ve lost who have been key players.

“Nevertheless, that’s what Palace is about these days, and they’ve got to start becoming a bit more of a Brighton in terms of having those replacements ready to come in and fix and then get on and sell them down the road. Maybe rather than waiting so long to sell, Palace should be looking to develop some talent and sell it a bit earlier.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta update emerges

Crystal Palace have received a boost in the transfer market, with Aston Villa set to end their pursuit in Mateta.

Aston Villa are close to confirming the signing of striker Tammy Abraham, meaning the club would struggle to afford a move for Mateta.

If the French striker does depart Selhurst Park though, Crystal Palace are lining up Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen as his replacement.
