Crystal Palace ‘working to block Oliver Glasner exit’ amid Woody Johnson intervention

Steve Parish is doing all he can to keep Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace despite the manager’s frustrations at a lack of transfer activity.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has been impressed with Glasner’s tenure at Crystal Palace.

Glasner sent a message to the Crystal Palace board after a 2-1 defeat against Man United, claiming the club should invest money into the squad rather than save funds.

The Austrian is the club’s most successful manager ever after Crystal Palace won the FA Cup, and subsequently qualified for European competition, for the first time last season.

Steve Parish relationship ‘not good’ with Oliver Glasner

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has given his verdict on Glasner amid his Crystal Palace contract expiring at the end of the season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the clubs transfer budget next summer will be a “big part of the conversation” over whether Glasner remains at Selhurst Park.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Yeah, look, it’s the noises coming out of Selhurst Park are not good in terms of that relationship. Steve Parish, I’m sure, is obviously very aware of that.

He knows the talent he’s got in his hands. And so when you start looking at you know, he could go. There are a number of clubs that are looking at Glasner. He’s really impressed, not only, you technically, but everything he said, he’s handled himself well.

“He stood up for himself, but he’s done it in a good way. He handled a very tricky transfer window last summer with grace and kept the whole thing moving forward. And so every notices that.

And so, yes, look, Glasner is a talent and he will be sought after. But don’t underestimate Parish. He’ll be in there talking to him, trying to find a way forward. Now, it also depends on what, with Woody Johnson coming in as the new shareholder at Palace, can they offer enough money to try and tempt him to have a transfer pot in the summer?

That’ll be a big part of the conversation. I think Glasner is now of a position where he’s strong enough to demand that sort of thing and also deserve it because he seems to be moving forward.”

Glasner frustrations set to continue

Glasner may not have the funds to spend in January at Crystal Palace, with the club likely to have to sell players before they can buy.

Defender Marc Guehi is the most likely player to depart Crystal Palace, with the Eagles not wanting to lose the 25-year-old on a free next summer.

Glasner wants to increase the depth of his squad to aid a run in the Europa Conference League, where Crystal Palace are one of the favourites for the competition.
