Curtis Jones and Eberechi Eze respond to Phil Foden’s message after Man City masterclass

Phil Foden appeared in high spirits after helping Man City make the perfect start to their Club World Cup campaign.

Man City began the summer tournament with a confident 2-0 win over Moroccan side Wydad AC on 18 June.

There had been some uncertainty over Foden’s form heading into the competition, but the England international made a statement after opening the scoring within just two minutes.

Jeremy Doku added a second before half-time, putting Pep Guardiola’s side in full control before the break.

Foden had a brilliant Man City performance that earned him Player of the Match and quickly put to rest any lingering doubts, as he ran the show.

Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both made their Man City debuts after signing ahead of the Club World Cup deadline, forming a promising midfield partnership that fans could see more of throughout the season.

Now, Foden posted a message to the Man City supporters after the side’s perfect start and quest for silverware.

After the commanding win, Foden posted a determined message on Instagram to supporters, saying: “It’s good to be back.”

The post received a wave of support, with Savinho responding with a heart emoji and Nico O’Reilly commenting “Starboy”.

Other players also showed appreciation by liking the post, including Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and City teammate John Stones.

Foden’s minutes were limited by Pep Guardiola towards the end of last season, starting just one of City’s final seven Premier League fixtures. That led to doubts over his role heading into the summer tournament.

Guardiola has already made some big calls this summer, such as leaving Jack Grealish out of the Club World Cup squad, but Foden appears to have come through that uncertainty and is now back in the side and delivering.

Man City face John Stones decision amid exit speculation

While Stones was among the names showing support online, he might not be sharing the pitch with Foden for much longer.

Stones has been linked with a move away from Manchester City after nine seasons at the club, with just one year left on his current deal.

Injury troubles saw him limited to just 20 appearances across all competitions last season with recurring foot and hamstring problems during the 2024–25 campaign.

Back in March, Football Insider revealed that Man City are open to letting Stones leave amid growing concerns over his long-term fitness.

A number of Premier League clubs are said to be interested, including former side Everton, though it’s still unclear whether the England international is ready to move on.
