Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott react as Van Dijk posts update away from Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk was one of four Liverpool players to feature as he led the Netherlands to victory in a World Cup qualifier.

Arne Slot‘s Dutch contingent at Anfield played a crucial role in their Premier League title success, as Van Dijk led the Reds to their 20th league title with Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo both at the forefront.

Liverpool cantered to the title and finished 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the end of Slot’s debut season in charge, but the 46-year-old has wasted no time in adding reinforcements to his squad.

The Reds are hot on Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz‘s heels in an aggressive start to the transfer window, and have already completed the signing of the latter’s Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong.

Van Dijk sends ‘grateful’ message after Netherlands developments

Frimpong‘s arrival at Anfield comes after Liverpool were the first side to trigger his £29.5million release clause at Leverkusen, as Slot’s crop of Dutch internationals in his title-winning squad grows to four.

All four of the Reds’ Netherlands internationals started in Helsinki as the Oranje beat Finland on Saturday in their 2026 World Cup qualifier, as Van Dijk captained Ronald Koeman’s side to a comfortable 2-0 win.

Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries’ early goals had the result all but wrapped up after just 23 minutes for the Oranje, and Van Dijk posted on Instagram (8 June) after full-time with a message to supporters.

Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo and the exit-linked Harvey Elliott all liked Van Dijk’s post, which simply said: “Always grateful”.

Liverpool to accelerate transfer activity after Frimpong arrival

Frimpong certainly won’t take long to get accustomed to life at Anfield given three of his Netherlands team-mates are regulars for Liverpool, but he’s far from the only name Slot wants to add to the squad.

Liverpool’s attempts to sign Wirtz have already seen them table two sizeable bids, and their latest offer of £113m will shatter the transfer record set by Van Dijk’s £75m switch from Southampton in 2018.

Another big-money signing from the south coast could soon be on the cards in the form of Bournemouth left-back Kerkez, who will provide the perfect complement for Frimpong on the right as Liverpool’s core of Dutch players grows.
