Cyriel Dessers set to leave Rangers as club enters ‘youth movement’ – sources

Rangers are considering selling Cyriel Dessers this summer as the club focuses on a “youth movement.”

That’s the view of senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke, who spoke to Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast about Rangers’ current transfer philosophy.

Right now the Scottish giants are focusing on recruiting young players aged 21 years and under, who can grow into the future.

That new policy could result in many players no longer having a future at Rangers, and Dessers is one of them.

At 29 years of age, the strike could be on the chopping block this summer after an indifferent 2023-24 campaign.

According to sources, the Nigeria international is someone that Rangers will look to cash in on this summer.

Rangers will look to recoup their spending on Cyriel Dessers

The striker only joined Rangers last summer from Cremonese for a fee of £4million, but if they can make that money back then a transfer will take place this summer.

Dessers managed to score 22 goals in 54 appearances last season, but he was notable for missing lots of big chances at the same time.

There is interest in him from Italy, with Cagliari being a team that is monitoring his current situation.

However, Dessers is under contract at Ibrox until 2027, therefore the club doesn’t have to rush into any decisions regarding his immediate future.

Even though the Gers are open to selling Dessers, the club have been frustrated by missing out on several striker targets this summer.

With that in mind, Rangers will not be pushed to sell the experienced forward without being confident they can bring in a direct replacement.

In other news, Rangers are set to start the season outside Ibrox Stadium.
