Dan Ashworth: Eddie Howe and ‘too many voices’ – why Newcastle chief is quitting for Man United

Dan Ashworth’s unhappiness at Newcastle United is behind his imminent move to Man United to become their new football director, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (14 February) that Ashworth has agreed terms on a move to United and has informed the Magpies of his decision.

Sources with knowledge of Newcastle’s situation hves told Football Insider that the transfer guru feels there are “too many voices” involved with recruitment at St James’ Park.

The 52-year-old believes Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and other staff have more input than he bargained for when taking the job back in May 2022.

Sources also say Ashworth feels he has been unable to make the transfers he wants.

Newcastle bombshell: Ashworth dissatisfied with Howe involvement in recruitment

It is believed the transfer chief will now need to work an extensive period of gardening leave before starting work with Man United.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Ashworth will be given freedom in his new role at Man United.

Sources say the 52-year-old feels he has a good chance of taking the Red Devils forward – with his results unlikely to be worse than the current recruitment at Old Trafford.

Man United’s Ashworth swoop comes as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to buy a 25% stake in the club is approved – with his INEOS firm now set to take charge of footballing operations.
