Dan Ashworth: Newcastle on brink of ‘most important signing’ after reliable journalist’s update – pundit

Dan Ashworth could be Newcastle United’s “most important signing”, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant the 50-year-old will help the Magpies achieve their ambitions.

On 7 February, Brighton confirmed Ashworth had resigned from his position as technical director of the club amid speculation he was wanted at St. James’ Park.

According to Fabrizio Romano (21 February), the Englishman will become Newcastle’s technical director on a four-year deal.

He is said to already be “focused on potential moves” ahead of the summer transfer window.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the news, Campbell said: “That was always going to happen.

“He was on a bit of gardening leave from Brighton.

“He is a really good man who knows his stuff when it comes to recruitment.

“Listen, this could be Newcastle’s most important signings. He can help them achieve their ambitions moving forward.

“For the large-scale investment they want to make they need to get people in who can get a grip and do the job. Ashworth is going to be that guy. He’s going to have a really important role.

“They were focused on getting him and they’ve got their man. He will help take the club forward.”
