Dan Burn: Pundit predicts ‘underrated’ star will save Newcastle from relegation

Dan Burn could prove to new the best signing Newcastle United made during the January window.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a busy end to the club’s window.

Newcastle had been trying to sign a new centre-back throughout January and finally signed Burn, 29, on deadline day.

The Magpies failed to sign other targets such as Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos before switching their attention to the Brighton man.

Despite him not being Newcastle’s first choice, Kenny insists Burn is a better signing than some fans might think.

“I think Newcastle had a great window,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They strengthened all the positions they wanted to. Some of the signings might not be the big names some people wanted or expected.

“But a player like Dan Burn, a quality Premier League tested defender, is exactly what they needed.

“He might prove to be their best January signing actually. He can come straight in and it’s an instant improvement.

“He’s underrated and has been great for Brighton this season and Newcastle still had one of the worst defences in the Premier League.

“So they have replaced three of that back four, it makes sense. I just have a sneaky feeling Burn will be the one who makes the biggest difference if they stay up.”

Newcastle also signed Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimarães while Matt Targett signed on loan.

All of the new signings should be available to play in the club’s crunch game against Everton at St James’ Park on Tuesday (8 February).
