Dan Friedkin could spend £30m on young stars after Everton takeover – Borson

Dan Friedkin could have to double Everton’s current spending if he wants to improve the club’s academy infrastructure.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it would likely cost between £20-30million a year to run one of the best academies in the country.

The Friedkin Group have been granted exclusivity by Farhad Moshiri to complete a takeover of Everton after agreeing a deal in principle to take on his 94.1 per cent stake in the club.

The takeover has moved a step closer after the Texan company has paid off the club’s £158million loan to New York investment firm MSP Sports Capital.

Reports have suggested Friedkin is expected to invest substantially in the club’s infrastructure, with the academy one of the areas likely to be improved if he can get the deal over the line.

Dan Friedkin could spend big to improve Everton academy

Borson revealed clubs can make a lot of profit from investing in their academies as it only takes one player to be sold for big money or to make it into the first team to reap the rewards.

He told Football Insider: “Taking the academy and the training ground developments, that’s clearly going to be in the tens of millions of pounds.

“You can spend as much as you want on those things. They are also costs that tend to be on an annual basis.

“If you run one of the best academies in the country, it could cost you between £20-30million per season.

“Of course, that’s all deductible from a PSR perspective and all it takes is one big hit coming out of those academies to repay all of that investment.

“You can make a lot of profit from your academy assets that either go into the first team or are sold on.

“It’s really how long is a piece of string in terms of what they want to spend on the academy.

“They are already spending quite a lot because Everton do have a top-class academy already.

“You would probably expect something like a doubling of the amount that’s spent on the academy if they were really serious and wanted to compete with the top clubs.”
