Daniel Farke makes new Leeds transfer plan as top priority revealed
Leeds United will prioritise signing a wide attacker rather than a striker to solve their goalscoring issues in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
Daniel Farke‘s side suffered a last-gasp 1-0 defeat to Fulham on Saturday after Gabriel Gudmundsson’s own goal, as Leeds lost a ninth straight match in London and once again failed to score at the other end.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Leeds will look to address their problems in front of goal once January rolls around, having netted once in their four matches so far.
Leeds signed Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on free transfers over the summer to join Joel Piroe in Farke’s striking ranks, but Calvert-Lewin’s “bang average” performance at Fulham was slammed.
Noah Okafor did put in his best display since his £18million move from Milan, but my sources have said that Leeds are looking to sign yet another wideman rather than strengthen at centre-forward in January.
Farke was left “frustrated” after Leeds failed with deadline day moves for both Harry Wilson and Manor Solomon, and my sources told Football Insider that this is the area Leeds feel they’re short of options.
Leeds United look to the wings to solve their goals problem
Football Insider revealed on Friday that Leeds are still in the market for a new striker after fleeting links to Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, but wingers like Wilson are seen as more attainable targets.
“Nmecha was leading the line in the first few games of season, while Calvert-Lewin also came in”, I shared on the new Inside Track Podcast.
“If he can stay fit, he could prove to be a real asset for Leeds United. Noah Okafor arrived from Milan as well.
“If none of those players mentioned are able to provide the goals for Leeds, then they might have to look to bring somebody in in the January window.
“I don’t think it’s a top priority right now – they’re probably looking for a wide attacker, rather than a number nine.”
Harry Wilson transfer hopes re-ignited at Elland Road
Leeds facing Fulham in their first match since the transfer window closed was somewhat ironic, after they tried and failed to sign Wilson on deadline day and he was then brought into the hosts’ starting XI.
With the match seemingly bound for a stalemate, Wilson tested Karl Darlow with a well-taken free-kick before Gudmundsson‘s last-gasp own goal as speculation over his long-term Fulham future continues.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday, however, that Fulham could look to cash in on Wilson in January, giving Leeds renewed hope that a deal is there to be done as they bid to add much-needed quality in the final third.
