‘Daniel Levy in last chance saloon after startling Tottenham news’
Tottenham could be hamstrung in the summer transfer window with the club’s transfer debt spiralling despite a recent lack of success.
According to The Telegraph (28 April), Spurs face a tough summer of trading with net transfer debt reaching almost £280million.
That figure is what Tottenham owe to other clubs for previous transfers – minus what they are owed for their own sales.
Chairman Daniel Levy has long been exploring selling a minority stake in Spurs to raise much-needed capital to keep the club competitive.
But Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed Levy is “leaving it until the last minute” to avoid a potential disaster.
‘Tottenham have got to find the cash’ with tough summer ahead, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed both Levy and ENIC partner Joe Lewis are unwilling or unable to provide more funding for Tottenham.
The Telegraph’s report claims Spurs could be forced to make big sales – with Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero named as stars potentially heading for the exit door.
Wyness claimed Tottenham’s debt is one of the highest in the Premier League.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
14 | Everton | 35 | 39 | -7 |
15 | Man United | 35 | 39 | -9 |
16 | Tottenham | 35 | 38 | +6 |
17 | West Ham | 35 | 37 | -19 |
18 | Ipswich Town (R) | 35 | 22 | -41 |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “This isn’t really a PSR issue for Tottenham.
“As I understand it, Spurs have about £280million of debt on existing transfers. That’s one of the highest levels of debt on transfers of any club in the Premier League.
“Tottenham have got to find the cash – that’s the story, and the issue for them.
“Daniel Levy’s cash is all tied up in shares of the club. Joe Lewis, the real owner of Spurs, would have to cough up cash – which he doesn’t want to do.
“This is why we’ve been talking about a minority owner coming in and putting up a big chunk of cash.
“Levy is leaving it until the last minute, and it’s getting close now.”

Tottenham value Man City target Porro at £50m
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (27 April) that Tottenham will strike a hard bargain for Pedro Porro this summer as Man City attempt to re-sign the right-back.
Sources have told Football Insider that Spurs value the Spain international at £50million with City’s interest clear.
Porro joined Tottenham on loan in January 2023 before joining permanently later that year.
