‘Daniel Levy is wrong about Tottenham being in financial jeopardy, I should know’
Tottenham fans have held protests in recent months over Daniel Levy’s running of the club – and he has now hit back at the supporters.
Spurs are sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table and will go another year without silverware if they fail to win the Europa League.
Speaking as Tottenham revealed a turnover of £528.2million for the 2023-24 campaign, Levy said: “I often read calls for us to spend more, given that we are ranked as the ninth-richest club in the world.”
“Today’s financial figures reveal that such spending must be sustainable in the long term and within our operating revenues. Our capacity to generate recurring revenues determines our spending power.
“We cannot spend what we do not have, and we will not compromise the financial stability of this club.”
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on Levy’s comments.
‘Tottenham fans are crying out’ for change, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness has claimed Spurs “should be doing more to push forward on the pitch” despite Levy’s rationale.
Levy has been in talks with interested parties over selling a minority stake in the club at a £3.75billion valuation.
Wyness insisted the fans are “fed up” with the focus on off-pitch developments, such as the stadium and commercial deals.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The club is managed very well, as we know, and there are no dangers on that side.
“The stadium revenue is kicking in, it’s doing extremely well. The debt is going down.
“We always think in football that 70% of turnover should be spent on wages in the squad, Spurs are at 42%.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
12 | Crystal Palace | 29 | 40 | 3 |
13 | Man United | 30 | 37 | -4 |
14 | Tottenham | 29 | 34 | 12 |
15 | Everton | 30 | 34 | -5 |
16 | West Ham | 30 | 34 | -17 |
“That’s where the fans are saying more money needs to be spent on the squad.
“But Daniel is saying that would put the club in financial jeopardy – and that’s the competing forces.
“The fans are crying out for Daniel Levy to gamble just a bit more, they are fed up of just having a good facility and want a great team as well.
“It’s always the same in football. I think there is room for Tottenham to have a bit more of a go.
“I’m afraid they should be doing more to push forward on the pitch.”

Postecoglou sack update from Tottenham
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (1 April) that Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is not likely to cling on in the dugout if he doesn’t deliver Europa League success.
Postecoglou was appointed in 2023 and finished fifth in his first season at the club.
Sources have told Football Insider that this season is now “Europa League or bust” for the Spurs boss – who is under contract at until June 2027.
