Daniel Levy to leave Tottenham? ‘Incredible’ verdict after claim live on air

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is not going to leave the club despite criticism around the board’s lack of spending in recent years.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Spurs are currently one of the most successfully run clubs in the world under Levy.

Speaking live to Spanish TV after Tottenham lost 4-3 at home against Chelsea earlier this month, Cristian Romero criticised the board for their lack of spending.

He said: “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.

“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they [the board] realise it.”

The defender has since apologised for his controversial comments, according to manager Ange Postecoglou, who has faced sack calls after poor results in the 2024-25 campaign so far.

Spurs’ revenue rose to a club record £549.6million in their latest accounts for 2022-23, while their wage bill sat at £251.1million across the same period.

Tottenham can’t compete for trophies without increased wage bill

But Borson insisted Tottenham are not going to be able to compete for trophies consistently without increasing their wage bill.

He told Football Insider: “Spurs are one of the most successfully run football clubs from a financial perspective possibly in the world.

“If you look at the growth of the club in value terms and from an asset’s perspective, we all know they have built one of the best stadiums in the world in central London relatively seamlessly.

“Daniel Levy himself owns 25 per cent indirectly of Tottenham, so in himself he’s a dollar-billionaire.

“People talk about Levy as if he’s a hired CEO, whose only wealth is from his job. It’s just not the case at all. He’s a very substantial owner of the club and he’s not going anywhere unless he wants to. He owns 25 per cent of the company.

“Should they be spending more? Clearly, if you want to be successful on the pitch, it’s almost impossible to do it with the level of wage bill that Tottenham have.

“We know that there is a correlation between wage bill and success on the pitch. Tottenham have had a wage bill for years that’s been 50 per cent less than the other big teams.

“The bottom line is, if Spurs want to be successful, it’s going to be incredibly difficult for them to win trophies consistently, unless they spend a very substantial extra amount of money.

Tottenham, Daniel Levy

“But I very much doubt they are going to do it, it’s just not the way that they are set up.

“They are trying to set themselves up as a much more sustainable business that can be profitable and I think, unfortunately, expectations of anything else are probably misplaced.”
