Danny Mills has claimed Kalvin Phillips will be really encouraged that Leeds United have made it clear they will push the boat out to keep him this summer.
Football Insider revealed on Monday that Phillips was told by club chiefs during contract talks before he headed out on holiday he will be offered an improved deal amid interest from Premier League clubs led by Bournemouth.
The 23-year-old is in demand following a stellar campaign in which he emerged as one of the best defensive midfielders outside of the Premier League and was named in the official Football League team of the season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-United ace Mills is in no doubt that the Leeds academy product will be delighted by the promising signal from the club.
“It will be a huge boost to Kalvin Phillips that the club want to keep him and give him a new deal,” Mills said. “He will be thinking, ‘great, the club I love want me’ and, believe me, that really does matter.
“Players want what they are worth, and also want to play week in, week out. If you are a young player and getting good advice from your agent, the aim should be to get as much money as you can from the club you are at and to play every week.
“Phillips might not be a regular starter at a Premier League club, so he could stay at Leeds for another season, improve his game under Marcelo Bielsa and then treble his wages by moving to the Premier League in a year’s time when he is in a better position to play every week.”
Phillips has made 141 appearances for Leeds since graduating from their youth ranks and is rated in the £12-15million bracket with his current deal due to expire in the summer of 2021.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have rejected a bid for a senior star.
