Danny Mills claims that the relationship between Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will play a big part in Jack Clarke’s immediate future.
The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says it is his understanding that the Argentinian duo are in regular contact having built up a relationship early in their careers, and suggests that Clarke’s situation will be discussed in their talks.
The promising winger signed for Tottenham this summer but was sent back to Elland Road on a season-long loan, although Football Insider can reveal that a clause in his contract means he could be recalled in January.
Mills says that other Championship sides may not be convinced about taking him on loan for themselves and insists that the Bielsa influence will be playing a significant role over whether he stays or goes.
Mills told Football Insider: “You’re only guaranteed to start when you’re good enough. Like I’ve said before, when he gets his chance, he’s got to take it.
“If you’re good enough, you will play. He’s got to work incredibly hard in training because other teams will be going: ‘Okay, why are we going to take him on loan if he’s not good enough to get in the Leeds side?’
“A lot of that will come down to the relationship between Bielsa and Pochettino. It’s my understanding they talk very regularly, so they’ll be right across it.”
Clarke has not featured for Leeds in the Championship this season and has missed out on the last three matchday squads, including the side who travelled to Stoke City on Saturday.
His only minutes for the first-team have come in the League Cup win over Salford.
In other Leeds United news, Whelan has revealed to Football Insider that one Whites star was left “gutted” after victory over Brentford.
