Danny Mills has tipped Dwight Gayle to have a big role to play at Newcastle United next season after the exit of Rafael Benitez.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England international claimed the striker is a “fabulous” goalscorer who can re-establish himself at St James’ Park.
Gayle spent last season on loan at Championship club West Brom after slipping down the pecking order under Benitez, who preferred a powerful front man to lead the attack.
The 28-year-old demonstrated his eye for goal with 24 strikes in 41 games for the Baggies, who lost in the play-off semi-finals to eventual promotion winners Aston Villa.
“Dwight Gayle could have a big role to play at Newcastle next season,” Mills told Football Insider. “Benitez didn’t fancy him, and wanted a target man up front, but the new manager might fancy him.
“There’s no doubt he’s a fabulous goalscorer and he did well for West Brom last season. If you give him service, he will score goals, even at Premier League level, and he’s one player who could be a revelation, with Benitez leaving.”
Gayle joined Newcastle for £10million from Crystal Palace in 2016 and was a key figure in the club’s promotion campaign in his first season.
In 79 appearances for the north-east giants the striker has scored 29 goals and has also been a frequent scorer for Crystal Palace and Peterborough United, as well as at West Brom.
In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are in pole position to sign a big name after a major transfer development.
