Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that his former side need to sign four more players in order to compete next season.
Despite not playing European football throughout the entire season, Liverpool have been well off the pace and they currently find themselves 17 points behind league champions Chelsea.
There were encouraging signs at the start of the season for the Reds but it all fell apart at the start of the new year as Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to win a single game in all competitions in January, including damaging losses to Wolves and Southampton at home in the domestic cup competitions.
Writing in the Evening Standard, Danny Murphy believes that recruits in four specific areas during the summer transfer window will enable Liverpool to kick on and challenge for the major trophies in the upcoming season.
“They need a centre-back, a left-back and another midfielder,” he said.
“Then there is the issue of the centre-forward. They need a man who will produce at least 20 goals per season.”
James Milner has filled in at left-back throughout the entire season as it appears that Jurgen Klopp doesn’t fully trust Spaniard Alberto Moreno.
The 31-year-old has put on some admirable displays in the position but he is certainly not a natural fullback and he is definitely not the long-term solution in the position.
Conceding goals has also been a problem for Liverpool this season as they have let in the most goals out of all the teams currently occupying the top four places.
A win against Middlesborough on the final day of the season will guarantee Champions League football for Liverpool next season, giving them more of a chance to fill these four positions with top quality players.
