Danny Rohl already loves ‘fantastic’ Rangers player who has ‘so much potential’

Danny Rohl is one of the leading contenders to become the next Rangers manager, and he already loves one star at the club.

Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers after just 123 days in the job, meaning the Glasgow club are on the lookout for another permanent manager.

Rohl has been out of work since he left financially turmoiled Sheffield Wednesday in July, and was linked with the Rangers vacancy in the summer before Martin was appointed.

The first match for any new Rangers boss would be at home to Dundee United after the international break with the Gers currently eighth in the Scottish Premeirship.

Danny Rohl praises current Rangers star Djeidi Gassama

Rohl has previously worked with current Rangers winger Djeidi Gassama, who has been one bright spark in a bleak season for the club.

Gassama joined Rangers from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer after working under Rohl for his entire tenure at Hillsborough.

Speaking in November 2023, as per The Star, Rohl hailed Gassama’s ability when he was first coming through at the club after a match at Bristol City.

I think with Gass it was his first start in the XI, and he has so much potential,” Rohl said.

He has to improve with his load so he can do it for 90 minutes, but that’s a normal process if you don’t play much in the past.

But he has a weapon, he’s good one against one, and he’s also quick to make good movements between the lines and in the pockets. I’m happy with him.

He had a big opportunity in the first half with the transition, and we spoke before about ball positions. We spoke to the young players about coming in and showing what they can do, and he’s doing so step by step.

He was fantastic in training, and that’s the reason why we took him.

It’s not just about defending, we want to attack and play forward. And this is the reason why I put him in.”

Now 22, Gassama had started all but three matches under Martin at Rangers, completing 90 minutes in each of the last four fixtures.

Gassama’s record under Rohl

The Frenchman already has five goals in 15 appearances for Rangers, and is on course to smash his goal scoring record at Sheffield Wednesday under Rohl.

In the 2024-25 season, Gassama contributed eight goals, the fourth most in the squad under Rohl.

If Rohl does arrive at Ibrox, then his relationship with Gassama could unlock even more potential from the winger.

Gassama has proved to be one of Martin’s best purchases at the club, with fellow wingers Mikey Moore and Oliver Antman yet to convince.
