Darragh MacAnthony delivers emphatic Twitter verdict on Leeds promotion chances

By Alex Stevens

Darragh MacAnthony has expressed his conviction on Twitter that Leeds have a “serious chance” of securing promotion to the Premier League this season.

The outspoken Peterborough chairman believes the club’s passionate support could give them a major advantage in the May play-offs.

Asked by a Leeds supporter for his verdict on whether they can make it to the “promised land” next season after 13 years in the lower leagues, MacAnthony was emphatic about the possibility.

“Serious chance, and with that crowd support home/away in play-offs and possibly Wembley, I fancy them,” replied MacAnthony on his personal Twitter account.

Garry Monk has transformed the fortunes of Leeds since taking over last June and has steered the club to fourth spot in the Championship table and on course to book a spot in the play-offs.

The Yorkshire giants have accumulated a haul of 69 points from 38 matches, opening up an eight-point gap over Fulham in seventh.

Automatic promotion is a more distant prospect, given that Leeds are eight points adrift of Brighton in second place despite securing a notable win against Chris Hughton’s side last Saturday.

MacAnthony’s Peterborough are 11th in League One after seeing their own play-off hopes diminish in recent weeks.

By contrast, Leeds are flying high and are next in action when they travel to play-off rivals Reading for a 5.30pm Championship kick-off next Saturday.

In other Leeds news, the club have sealed an out-of-window midfielder transfer.
