Darwin Nunez could be sidelined for ‘six months’ at Liverpool after talks – expert

Kevin Campbell has claimed Darwin Nunez could take “six months” to settle in at Liverpool after his indifferent start at the club.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 23-year-old’s sending-off against Crystal Palace in August did him “no favours” to his chances of “hitting the ground running”.

Nunez played just one minute in the 3-3 Premier League draw against Brighton on Saturday (1 October) but was restored to the starting lineup against Rangers in a 2-0 Champions League win (4 October).

The striker cost a reported club-record £85million fee but has notched just two goals in eight appearances this season across 340 minutes of action.

As quoted by the Daily Mail (3 October), Jurgen Klopp claimed Nunez is “still adapting” and pleaded for patience with the hitman.

The German revealed he had a lengthy meeting with the Uruguay international to put his mind at ease.

Campbell suggested Klopp was right to “go back to his tried and tested” in the form of striker Roberto Firmino.

He told Football Insider: “This is one of the problems when you go to a club like Liverpool with the levels they expect to be at.

“His sending-off did him no favours. He was still getting used to the Premier League.

“He’s missed three games, come back – and now he’s not scoring. He’s not hit the ground running.

“Sometimes, it takes six months to settle in. Jurgen Klopp has the squad to change things around.

“He’s got to find the right balance, and he’s gone back to his tried and tested – and it’s worked, in a sense.

“Nunez will get his game time, and Liverpool will come good. It’s just a difficult time for him right now.”
