Dave King: Celtic idol drops emphatic Rangers takeover verdict after latest twist
Dave King ‘couldn’t do a worse job’ at Rangers after the ex-chairman was linked with a sensational return to the club following John Bennett’s decision to step down.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes Rangers are in ‘the same boat’ as Celtic were in the early 90s but admits the club’s pile of debt will make things tricky.
King, 69, left his role as Chairman in 2020, believing the club to be in safe hands, but the gap between them and their Old Firm rivals has widened both on and off the pitch.
The South African businessman oversaw Rangers’ return to the Scottish top flight following their liquidation in 2012 and played a huge role in bringing title-winning manager Steven Gerrard to the club.
Rangers in shambles as Dave King plots return
Philippe Clement’s side remain five points off league leaders Celtic in third position but put their Old Firm defeat behind them to beat Dundee United 1-0 on Sunday.
“The fans were against him (King), couldn’t wait to get rid of him so I don’t know what’s happening”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“I tell you what, he couldn’t do a worse job than what’s happening there at the moment.
“I don’t know the ins and outs, but it’s like the hand that keeps giving for the Celtic supporters.
“Celtic were in the same boat in the early 90s, they were going bankrupt and then the wee man with the bonnet, McCann came in and took us to another place.
“They need that, I don’t know who’s going to give it because there is so much debt.

“They’re back at Ibrox this week, I think they’ve got three stands, the fans will appreciate that, going back because they didn’t take to Hampden Park.
“The fans will get behind them at the weekend in their Cup tie against Dundee FC.”
