David Beckham cited as Leeds United starlet backed for January move – pundit

Frank McAvennie has told Joe Gelhardt to leave Leeds United on loan as soon as possible.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Gelhardt won’t progress his development by playing for the Leeds youth team.

The 20-year-old netted two goals for the Whites’ under-21 team in their 5-3 over Tranmere Rovers in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday (4 October).

The striker has made seven appearances for Jesse Marsch’s side so far this season.

He has made just one Premier League start in their 5-2 win over Brentford last month (3 September).

As quoted by LeedsLive (7 October), Marsch said the forward is “very dangerous”.

McAvennie insisted Gelhardt needs to go on loan to get consistent game time at a senior level.

I think it is so important because I do not think they get it playing with the youth teams,” he told Football Insider.

Reserve games were the best thing for youngsters. There were players who were not getting a game and they would play in the reserve game, especially with the squads they have got nowadays. There would always be four or five experienced players alongside the youngsters. They do not do that now so you have to have game time.

I keep saying if you are not playing, I am all for anyone leaving and going on loan. David Beckham went on loan and it didn’t do him any harm, he grew up when he was away. You have got to play, it is part of your development as a young kid.
