David de Gea let down by Man United amid journalist’s transfer update – pundit
Frank McAvennie has insisted Man United goalkeeper David de Gea is “one of the best in the world”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said De Gea was “let down” by the defence last season.
According to the Daily Mail‘s Simon Jones (10 July), Man United are interested in signing free agent keeper Thomas Strakosha, 27, from Lazio.
United are said to be close to agreeing personal terms with the Albanian, who has been in talks with Fulham and Chelsea.
United’s current number one, De Gea, has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months.
McAvennie has suggested Erik ten Hag’s side have “bigger problems” than a new goalkeeper.
“I think they need more than a goalkeeper who’s on a free. I think they’ve got bigger problems to worry about than getting one of them in,” he told Football Insider.
“I think he’s still one of the best in the world, de Gea. I think he’s up there.
“I felt sorry for him last year and the year before because the defence was giving him no help. Right across the back four, [Raphael] Varane looked shell-shocked, like he couldn’t believe what was happening, how bad they were. [Luke] Shaw hasn’t done it for me either.”

De Gea made 46 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions last season.
He kept ten clean sheets in those outings.
