David de Gea return update at Man United as ‘Andre Onana faces exit with Bayindir’

Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir’s uncertain futures at Man United have led to speculation David de Gea could return to the club, and an update has now emerged.

Having endured a miserable first two seasons since joining from Inter Milan in 2023, Onana’s future at Man United remains shrouded in mystery.

The Cameroonian has made a series of high-profile errors during his time in Manchester, and following two key mistakes against Lyon, the ex-Ajax goalkeeper was dropped for the match against Newcastle on Sunday (13 April).

Onana‘s deputy, Bayindir, was called upon for the game against the Magpies, but having conceded four against the high-flying Carabao Cup winners, the Turkish shot-stopper does not look like the answer to United’s woes.

De Gea has been rumoured to be a target for United this summer, with the Spaniard enjoying an outstanding season with Fiorentina in Serie A, and The i have provided an update on the Red Devils’ messy goalkeeping situation.

David de Gea update whilst Andre Onana on trial’ at Man United

Whilst the move would undoubtedly make a subject of United’s fanbase delighted, a move to bring De Gea back to the club is considered very unlikely to materialise, several sources confirmed to The i.

Meanwhile, Onana, along with several other first-team players, has been placed “on trial” by manager Ruben Amorim for the final few games of the Red Devils’ season.

This has further cast the Cameroonian’s future into doubt, and the club have prioritised signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.

Whilst Bayindir failed to impress as his replacement, Onana’s mistakes against Lyon last week have resulted in Amorim remaining undecided as to whether the 29-year-old will remain the first-choice next season.

In the short term, the Portuguese manager has not yet decided on who to start in net for the second-leg against the French side, with Onana “kept in the dark” by his boss.

Sources told The i the Cameroonian’s teammates have been supportive of the struggling goalkeeper and have rallied around him this week.

As for Bayindir, he is reportedly “likely” to leave in the summer window in a bid to secure first-team football.

Ruben Amorim’s dreams of a Man United rebuild on hold

Football Insider Verdict

The Red Devils’ difficult financial situation, coupled with Jim Ratcliffe’s hubristic plans to build a monolithic “new” Old Trafford, will undoubtedly have a crippling effect on Amorim’s squad planning for next season.

United will reportedly only have a budget of £20-30million to work with in the summer.

Amorim has made no bones about the major surgery that is required to create a squad up to his lofty standards, and that figure will not be nearly enough to achieve that.

The near-impossible situation the Portuguese manager finds himself in is that he now needs time if he isn’t going to be given the funds he needs, but United’s ownership and fanbase are both quick on the trigger when their side isn’t winning.

Somehow, Amorim needs to find a way to create a winning side with what he has, at the same time as rebuilding the confidence of his downtrodden players whilst also navigating the politics of being manager of England’s most famous sporting institution. Good luck to him.
