David Moyes: ‘Everton won’t make the same mistake as West Ham’

David Moyes is in line for a new contract at Everton as a result of the success he has had since taking over from Sean Dyche in January 2025.

The boss signed an initial two-and-a-half-year deal which will see him in charge at the Hill Dickinson Stadium until 2027, but they are now keen to extend his stay.

Former West Ham scout Mick Brown, who worked closely alongside Moyes at the London Stadium, told Football Insider that Everton will not repeat the Hammers’ mistakes.

West Ham opted to let Moyes leave in search of a more attractive brand of football, and just two seasons later have found themselves in the relegation zone.

Everton are currently eighth in the Premier League and on course to qualify for a European competition, and their first priority is to tie down the manager to a new deal.

How are Everton progressing in David Moyes contract talks?

Brown told Football Insider on 31 March that Everton are accelerating talks with Moyes in a bid to secure his long-term future at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Following an emphatic 3-0 victory against Chelsea before the international break, they are just two points shy of the Blues with the top six now in sight.

Moyes has masterminded major changes at Everton to help the club start pulling in the right direction and has become a crucial part of their ambitious plans.

“Everton won’t make the same mistakes as West Ham,” Brown told Football Insider.

“They got sucked into the idea that they should be playing more attractive football and that the way Moyes had them playing was not good enough.

“This is while they were qualifying for European competitions, they won the Conference League and were regularly competing in the top half of the Premier League.

“Look at what’s happened to West Ham since, they’re at serious risk of relegation.

“Everton on the other hand, are where West Ham used to be, and that’s no coincidence, it’s down to the work Moyesey has done there.

“Everton know how good of a manager they’ve got and they know how valuable he is to them on the pitch and behind the scenes as well.

“Handing him a new contract to extend his stay is a no-brainer, really, because they want to continue the progress they have made under him.”

How does Moyes feel about his position at Everton?

Since his return to Everton, Moyes has been leading their ambitious transfer plans as they strive to make progress on and off the pitch.

Brown told Football Insider last month that Moyes is playing a key role for Everton behind the scenes, and is leading their transfer plans as well as their on-pitch progress.

The boss works closely with the Football Leadership Team, having moved away from the director of football model, and is very happy with his position.

Moyes had become frustrated at West Ham when much of his influence was stripped away from him, but Everton are now prepared to back him on and off the pitch.

Ahead of the summer window, when Everton hope he will sign a new contract, transfer plans are already being put in place to strengthen his squad.
