David Moyes now ‘attractive option to replace Gary O’Neil’ at Wolves

Wolves are assessing potential managers to replace Gary O’Neil with David Moyes an “attractive option,” according to The Mail.

According to the outlet’s website on 5 December, Wolves have been searching for potential managers since the November international break.

Moyes now appears to be an option they could approach, but the 61-year-old “wasn’t convinced” by Leicester and it’s unclear whether he “may feel the same way” about this job as well.

The Midlands club initially spoke to Graham Potter, but Football Insider exclusively revealed that the Englishman is in advanced talks over a deal to take charge of West Ham instead.

This comes after sources told Football Insider on 4 December that Potter is emerging as the leading contender for the role.

Wolves may require the experience David Moyes could offer

Football Insider opinion

Moyes’ time at West Ham ended on a tough note, with fans often criticising his style of play. This is despite him finishing 9th in his final season.

Yet his time in East London was memorable, winning the Conference League. Wolves’ European nights seem a distant memory as they now face the threat of relegation.

The Scotsman’s experience could be exactly what this young side needs. O’Neil’s style has drawn criticism for being too open, reflected in Wolves conceding the most goals in the league, with 36. Only Southampton have a worse goal difference.

Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that if the Englishman does not make changes, he “will be sacked.”

The defensive struggles have worsened over their last two matches, where they conceded eight goals to Bournemouth and Everton. This has placed increased pressure on the club’s hierarchy to act.

Moyes is expected to tackle these defensive issues, including problems with set-pieces and counter-attacks, to strengthen the team.

That experience could be the key to saving their season, provided the 61-year-old agrees to a deal.

However, the primary factor keeping O’Neil in charge is the lack of a suitable replacement [The Mail]. This leaves the situation uncertain as to whether the hierarchy will make a move to sack him.

Wolves’ next match is against West Ham on Monday night, where both teams could soon have new managers in the dugout.
