David Sullivan has revealed that both Winston Reid and Cheikhou Kouyate have been playing for West Ham with injuries that require operations for much of the season.
Speaking exclusively to Claret and Hugh, co-owner Sullivan claimed that both senior stars have needed operations for some time, but have continued to play.
However, they will now be allowed to go under the knife after the Hammers confirmed Premier League safety with Friday night’s win over Tottenham at the London Stadium.
Sullivan also revealed that 28-year-old ace Angelo Ogbonna will return against Burnley on May 21, as he hopes New Zealand captain Reid will postpone surgery to feature against Liverpool next weekend.
“Players like Reid and Kouyate have been playing with serious injuries that need operations,” Sullivan revealed.
“Now we are safe Kouyate will be operated on this week. We hope Reid can hang on for one more game until Angelo Ogbonna is back.”
Sky Sports revealed that Kouyate has endured a wrist injury for much of the season, which also saw him carry the injury when representing Senegal at the African Cup of Nations in January.
But Sullivan has now revealed that Reid is set to join him on the sidelines in order to correct an issue under the knife, but he should wait one more match in order to give Ogbonna time to return.
Former Juventus star Ogbonna has been sidelined with a long-term knee injury since January and was set to miss the rest of the season, but he is now in line to return against Burnley.
The win against Spurs, thanks to Manuel Lanzini’s goal, sees the Hammers climb to 11th place in the league as they look to finish the Premier League season on a high.
In other West Ham news, Jermaine Jenas has claimed that this senior star is underrated.
