David Turnbull facing extended spell on sidelines after Celtic injury update – McAvennie

Frank McAvennie has suggested David Turnbull will struggle for a place in the Celtic side after a poor showing against RB Leipzig.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Turnbull was “terrible” when he came off the bench against Leipzig on Tuesday (11 October).

The 23-year-old was on the bench for the Champions League game and was subbed on for the final 25 minutes of the 2-0 defeat.

The midfielder was left out of the squad for the Celts’ 6-1 win over Hibernian on Saturday (15 October).

According to journalist Alison Conroy (14 October), Turnbull picked up a knock and was out of contention for the Hibs clash.

But McAvennie suggested Turnbull could be facing a longer spell out of the side.

I am going to be honest with you I thought Turnbull was terrible when he came on [against Leipzig],” he told Football Insider.

He did not look fit, it did not look as if he could run. I am a big fan of Turnbull, I thought he was great, but he came on the other night and he just wasn’t for me.

For one of the goals he pulled out the tackle. You cannot do that. One, you are going to hurt yourself and two, at the top level you can’t do that.

Turnbull did not do it for me coming on, hopefully it was just an off night. He could take [Reo] Hatate’s place but not with the way he played against Leipzig.

Celtic

Turnbull has made 12 appearances for the Celts across all competitions this season.

He has only started four of those games.
