‘Davide Ancelotti fan club’ slammed after Rangers manager update – ‘we all know…’
Davide Ancelotti is the favourite to become the next manager of Rangers with legendary father Carlo confirming he is in talks to become a boss in his own right.
Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (28 May) that Rangers are set to finalise a new manager appointment after their US-backed takeover is ratified and confirmed.
Sources say former Real Madrid assistant boss Ancelotti, son of Carlo, is the “prime candidate and front-runner” for the role.
Meanwhile, Luka Modric and David Alaba are among the star names to be linked with a move to Ibrox in recent days and weeks.
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Ancelotti appears to have a “fan club” within new owners 49ers Enterprises, but hopes they are not “blinded by the name”.
Wyness ‘cautions against’ Ancelotti appointment at Rangers
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness cautioned against installing Ancelotti at Ibrox as he lacks experience and “doesn’t understand Glasgow”.
The 35-year-old has worked as an assistant to his father since taking a fitness coach role with Paris Saint-Germain in 2012.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
1 | Celtic | 38 | 92 | 86 |
2 | Rangers | 38 | 75 | 39 |
3 | Hibernian | 38 | 58 | 12 |
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “They’re trying to sell him as having the contacts to attract better players.
“We all know it has been his father who has attracted the players, but Davide will have gotten to know them – he will have the contacts.
“But, I would still caution against putting him in at Rangers.
“He hasn’t got the experience, he doesn’t understand Glasgow – I think they’ll be in a dogfight anyway, it’s a big period of change.
“But he’s the odds-on favourite, it does seem that he has a fan club within the 49ers organisation.
“I hope they’re not blinded by the name.
“A lot of players and agents can see beyond the name, so that’s not the right reason to bring Ancelotti in.
“I still think it should be someone with experience and someone who understands the Old Firm dogfights.
“Good luck to him if he gets it, but Ancelotti wouldn’t be my first choice if I was in the committee.”

Rangers chase Austria-based wing-back
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (27 May) that West Brom and Rangers are chasing LASK defender George Bello.
The United States international, 23, is out of contract in the summer of 2026 and is valued by the Austrian club at around £1million.
Bello is a long-term target for Rangers, who have scouted him for the last three seasons.
