Former Celtic icon Davie Provan has criticised Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha for his handling of senior duo Harry Forester and Michael O’Halloran.
Caixinha inherited a Rangers side in disarray from his predecessor Mark Warburton, and has embarked upon a path that could see him make serious changes at the club this summer.
The Portuguese has already informed a number of senior figures at Ibrox that they are surplus to requirements at the club, and both Forrester and O’Halloran are two names that could be shipped out during the summer.
The duo, who are both 26, have each featured just once during Caixinha’s nine games in charge, suggesting they will be surplus to requirements at the end of the season.
It was reported in the Daily Record earlier this week that Caixinha had called Rangers’ fringe players – including the pair – in for 6am training sessions to prove their fitness ahead of the summer.
But Provan has advised Caixinha not to risk damaging morale by wielding the axe in reckless fashion, praising rival boss Brendan Rodgers for his handling of the players at Celtic this term.
He wrote in his column for the Scottish Sun: “Nothing wrong with Pedro Caixinha flexing muscle, but making Michael O’Halloran and Harry Forrester train at 6am?
“A good way to ensure neither will go the extra yard for Caixinha if they’re ever asked. Across town, Celtic are on the verge of a Treble because the players would walk over broken glass for Brendan Rodgers.
“With a raft of players heading out of Ibrox, Caixinha can’t afford to be p****** anybody off.”
Caixinha has already caused concern among Rangers supporters by revealing fan favourite Clint Hill will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Hill has proven to be a key figure at the club this term despite his advancing years, but the Rangers chief has chosen not to offer him an extended deal.
Fans would not likely, however, hold the potential departures of O’Halloran or Forrester in similar regard, but the risk of disrupting squad harmony will remain a concern.
In other Rangers news, the club have been dealt a major transfer blow following a revelation about this reported target.
