Rangers have fended off interest from Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest to land Osijek defender Borna Barisic for £2.2million, Football Insider sources understands.

Barisic is on the verge of a move to Rangers with the left-back undergoing a medical at Rangers’ Murray Park training ground this afternoon.

The Croatia international came to the attention of Rangers, Villa and Forest after he impressed for Osijek during their recent Europa League qualifier with the Scottish club.

Championship duo Villa and Forest are both in the market for a new left-back before the close of the transfer window and they made enquiries about Barisic.

However, Rangers have moved quickly to agree a deal in the region of £2.2million with Osijek for Barisic with the two English clubs failing to come up with offers to match Osijek’s valuation of the player.

The 25-year-old is now expected to finalise his move to Rangers and become Steven Gerrard’s latest new signing at Ibrox following a whirlwind of summer arrivals.
