Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is close to signing a new contract at Anfield, according to a report.
The Sun claims that the centre-back is set to be rewarded by the Reds after an encouraging season and he is set to feature in Jurgen Klopp’s plans next year.
It is understood that his contract extension will see his wages increase to £50,000-a-week, despite the fact he is already on a current deal that expires in 2022.
Football Insider verdict:
Gomez is certainly one of the promising young talents in the Premier League with a big future ahead of him and he has been unfortunate with injuries in the second half of the season. The versatile defender, who can play at centre-back or right-back, has the potential to become a mainstay in Klopp’s starting XI moving forward. Meanwhile, he has also featured three times already at senior international level and could be a useful player for England in the future. Gomez’s ambition has to be to try break into the Liverpool line up on a consistent basis and be the regular partner for powerhouse Virgil van Dijk. He will have to seize his opportunity the next time it comes around, but it seems like he is already a bit of a favourite with manager Klopp. Teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold has proven a youngster can cement his spot in the side and he needs to try follow his example next season.
