Celtic

Leigh Griffiths is on the verge of signing a new Celtic contract, he has confirmed.

The Scotland international, 27, is hoping that an extension to his current agreement can be sealed before the club’s season finishes with the Scottish Cup final against Motherwell on Saturday week.

The 5ft 11in striker has revealed that talks have now reached an advanced stage.

He said, as quoted by the Daily Record: “I’m hoping there will be a bit of news before the season is out. I’ve still got years left, so I am not sweating over it.

“I’m still looking to commit my long-term future here. We need to iron out every detail but I’m hoping it’ll be done before the season is out.”

Football Insider verdict:

Griffiths is already tied to Celtic until the summer of 2021, but the new deal proves how committed the club are to hanging on to and rewarding their top talent. The former Hibernian, Dundee, Livingston and Wolves player is sensible enough to know the grass is not always greener on the other side. It is also easy to see why he is so highly regarded at Celtic, despite what has been a frustrating season pockmarked by niggling injuries and spells playing second fiddle to fellow strikers Mousa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard. In 38 appearances, Griffiths has pilfered 13 goals, including some decisive ones, and his Celtic tally now amounts to 98 goals and 43 assists from 182 matches. Those are numbers not to be sniffed at, and the champions know it. Griffiths is a penalty box predator who is mobile, technically gifted and brings an almost cast-iron guarantee of goals. He is not looking for a move, and knows he is at a great club. A new deal suits all parties.
