Defender: Rangers should have hired ex-PL manager
Kilmarnock defender Gordon Greer believes Rangers should have appointed former West Brom and Reading manager Steve Clarke to replace Pedro Caixinha before he was surprisingly named as Killie boss in October.
Former Premier League manager Clarke, 54, shocked everyone when he replaced Lee McCulloch as Rugby Park boss and has made a huge difference at Kilmarnock since taking over.
Kilmarnock appointed Clarke just a few days before Pedro Caixinha was sacked at Ibrox – Caixinha’s last game for Rangers was Clarke’s first for Killie – and the former Chelsea No 2’s name had been quoted by bookies as a potential replacement for Caixinha at Ibrox.
Greer believes Clarke’s experience with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool would have been the ideal preparation for Clarke to have taken the reins at Ibrox.
“Definitely. I think so,” Greer said when asked if Rangers had missed out,” he said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“The gaffer has got fantastic pedigree.

“He has worked with some of the biggest clubs in England and with some great clubs and top players as well.
“Rangers is one of the biggest clubs in Scotland, but if you look at the clubs he (Clarke) has worked with down in England you can see he has worked with some of the top clubs down there.
“I don’t think he would have been fazed by it at all.”
Since taking over at Rugby Park, Clarke has secured draws with Rangers and Celtic as well as beating Hearts away from home as they have climbed to eighth in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers are still looking for a new manager after sacking Pedro Caixinha on October 26th after a 1-1 draw with Clarke’s side.
Under-20’s head coach Graeme Murty has been given interim control at Ibrox and is expected to remain in charge until the new year.
The Gers take on St. Johnstone at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon as they look to extend their recent winning run to five games.
In other Rangers news, Barry Ferguson has urged the Gers to sign this £4million+ dynamo who is also wanted by Celtic.
