Celtic reportedly on verge of deal: Rodgers must continue Jan shopping spree

COMMENT

Celtic are set to sign a new defender with Marvin Compper arriving in Scotland to complete a move for around £1million from RB Leipzig.

The Scottish Sun has reported that the one-time Germany international is in the UK ahead of finaling a deal to join the Hoops in January – but Brendan Rodgers’ shopping spree should not stop there.

It is a good move for the Scottish champions as their defence has looked shaky at times this season, most recently in the 4-0 defeat to Hearts.

More defenders are needed though, at left-back and another centre-back.

Celtic only have one recognisable left-back, the highly-rated Kieran Tierney.

Since the departure of Emilio Izaguirre in the summer Tierney has played practically every game this season, and it is beginning to take it’s toll.

He was forced off at half-time in the defeat to Hearts, it’s not yet known if he has an injury but if he does Celtic have no other left-back in the squad. Therefore it’s pivotal to bring one in, in January.

The centre-back position still needs to be sorted as both Simunovic and Boyata are badly out of form, Nir Bitton is a central defender who doesn’t look comfortable at times when he plays in defence, and Kristoffer Ajer, who despite being a great prospect seems a long way away from being a first team regular.

The signing of Compper is a good start to the January transfer window for the Scottish champions, if they add another centre-half and a left-back to their squad then it will prove to be a great transfer window.
