Darren Bent has been left drooling as Everton prepare to offer Abdoulaye Doucoure a big-money contract to sign him from Watford.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Tottenham and England striker insists that the Hornets’ star is “definitely an upgrade” on Carlo Ancelotti’s current midfield options.
As revealed by Football Insider on Friday, the Toffees are offering the 27-year-old a £120,000-a-week contract to convince him to swap Vicarage Road for Goodison Park.
Spotrac report that Yerry Mina and Bernard are the club’s current top earners at £120,000-a-week.
Reports state that Everton have seen an initial bid rejected by Watford but that they are set to launch a second bid shortly.
Bent believes Doucoure has even more to offer than he has already shown in the Premier League and that he would be an improvement on the Toffees’ current midfielders.
Bent told Football Insider: “I like him, I really like him. Last season, to be fair, he showed at times how good he is and he potentially underachieved a little bit because there were times where he was so good.
“His goals and that maybe didn’t match his performances but he is definitely an upgrade. Someone who is box-to-box, gets about, can get a goal, gets in the box but also got a big engine on him.
“For me, yeah, that is definitely an upgrade so get bringing him in. I also think he’s quite durable as well, I don’t remember him having too many injuries so yeah, it’s an upgrade.”
Doucoure played in all but one of Watford’s Premier League games last season as the Hornets were relegated to the Championship.
He has a total of 129 top-flight appearances to his name and has also spent time in La Liga and Ligue 1.
In other Everton news, clubs have been tipped to be queuing up to sign an attacker set to be sold for a huge loss.
