Danny Mills has tipped Rangers to try and sign Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on loan until the end of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England and Manchester City defender hailed the 19-year-old as a fantastic talent and insisted the Ibrox outfit would be the perfect opportunity for him to continue his development.

The Daily Telegraph report Gilmour is keen to leave Chelsea on loan before Monday’s deadline to ensure he has the best chance of making the Scotland squad for the summer’s European Championships.

Gilmour joined the Gers academy as a boy before moving to Chelsea just before his 16th birthday for a significant fee.

He was linked with a move back to Ibrox last year as he recovered from injury but Steven Gerrard dismissed the speculation.

Asked by Football Insider with the change in Gilmour’s situation could prompt Rangers to make a move, Mills said: “Definitely.

“I would suggest because Thomas Tuchel is new, he’s not going to start gambling with too many kids. I don’t expect him to throw the kids in at this stage because he needs to get results quickly. That generally means you go to experience and what you know.

“Billy Gilmour is a fantastic talent, we know that.

“Maybe somewhere like Rangers would be the perfect opportunity where he would obviously feel at home and where he would play.

“You’ve got Gary McAllister and Steven Gerrard – there aren’t too many better midfield combinations as coaches to learn under I don’t think.”

Gilmour has played 17 times for the Chelsea first team since breaking through last season.

Tellingly, he was not included in Tuchel’s first 20-man squad for their 0-0 draw with Wolves in midweek.

In other news, Football Insider understands Sunderland have agreed to sign Jordan Jones and the medical has been booked.
