'Still interested' - Expert delivers positive news on Newcastle takeover - updates timeline
There is still firm interest from at least one party in securing a takeover deal for Newcastle United but a deal will likely not go through until the end of the season, according to an expert on football finance.
Dr Tom Markham, who works for Sports Interactive and was involved in financial moves for both Southampton and West Brom, has claimed in podcast The Totally Football Show (29/01), as transcribed by the Chronicle, that the Magpies had as many as six interested parties in buying the club and that at least one is still involved in examining the club’s records.
However he also states that any move will likely not take place until at the end of the season as a result of the uncertainty over the club’s relegation battle.
He told the podcast: “I think a lot of the potential buyers are a little worried by their precarious position in the league, but there definitely is still interest in the club.
“It was a little bit suspect that the six parties that I believe have signed NDAs at Newcastle, yet one of them in particular seemed to be in the papers at all times
“I’m not exactly sure how many of those six parties are live still, but there are definitely still interested parties that are in the data room at the club.”
“From my experience, the best time to buy a club is at the end of the season. I think buyers will wait for then until they buy Newcastle.”
The Magpies have been up for sale since current owner Mike Ashley released a statement confirming his intention to sell back in October, and there were heavy links that British businesswoman Amanda Staveley, fronting a move from PCP Capital Partners, were heading the way to secure a deal.
The Sports Direct supremo has been in charge at St James’ Park since 2007, but has endured a tumultuous time on Tyneside, including two relegations and several controversial decisions, which has led to severe disdain for the businessman from the Newcastle supporters.
The club currently sit 14th in the Premier League, just one point off the relegation zone in what is their first season back after securing promotion from the Championship last season.
