Defoe has played his last game for Rangers after major development – McAvennie

Frank McAvennie claims Jermain Defoe has played his last game for Rangers.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted after the veteran appeared on Sky Sports at the weekend.

Defoe, 39, signed a new deal at Rangers this summer and remains at the club in a player-coach role.

The striker appeared as a pundit on Sunday’s Sky Sports’ Super Sunday programme and provided analysis on West Ham v Tottenham and Manchester United v Liverpool.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Rangers fans were left baffled as Defoe featured on English TV while Rangers were playing St Mirren.

McAvennie insists this proves Defoe won’t play for Rangers again.

When asked if Defoe has played his last game for Rangers, McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild, “I would think so.

“There are so many strikers there and he’s obviously done his pundit stuff with the blessing of the club.

“There is no way Steven Gerrard didn’t sign off on that. Defoe isn’t playing and I don’t think he will.

“That’s why he tried to branch out and do punditry. He picked a bad game to do though.

“He was never going to get a word in between Neville and Carragher after that game.

“I think the focus is on coaching for him and I do think he will make a great coach when the time comes.”

Defoe made one eight-minute cameo against Dundee United in the Premiership on 8 July.

He has made 44 appearances for the club in total and scored 21 goals.
