‘Chansiri must sell Sheffield Wednesday after transfer embargo’ – Fans erupt

Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been left furious by the news that the Championship club were handed a transfer embargo on Wednesday.

As confirmed by a club statement released by the Owls on 18 June, the South Yorkshire side will be unable to buy players for this summer’s window or the subsequent two transfer windows after owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay wages on time on three occasions between July 2024 and June 2025.

Amid the financial struggles overseen by Chansiri, Sheffield Wednesday players could leave Hillsborough as free agents if they do not receive June’s wages on time following May’s delay.

Despite the chaos overseen by the Thai businessman, Danny Rohl steered the Owls to a respectable 12th-place finish in the Championship last term.

Sheffield Wednesday fans call for imminent Chansiri departure amid embargo

Amid the ongoing chaos overseen by Chansiri, the Owls revealed via their statement that they intend to appeal the EFL’s decision to put them under embargo.

However, the Wednesday faithful have directed their anger at the South Yorkshire club’s ownership as opposed to the Championship’s governing body.

One Sheffield Wednesday fan asked on X: “On what grounds can you even consider appealing?”, while pleading to “just sell the club”, and another simply fumed: “Time to go, Chansiri.”

Wednesday will struggle to find Rohl replacement if Chansiri doesn’t sell

The Owls were already in a perilous situation after Chansiri rejected offers to buy Sheffield Wednesday despite his ongoing failure to meet basic financial obligations.

But now that the South Yorkshire club have been handed a transfer embargo spanning three windows, they have become an even less attractive side for a new manager to join.

Rohl steered Wednesday to a comfortable finish

Even though Rohl was previously wanted by Rangers, but did not join the Ibrox giants, the German still appears highly likely to quit his job this summer.

Meanwhile, Rohl is set for a standoff with Chansiri amid his desire to leave the Championship side thanks to their ever-worsening financial turmoil.

The 36-year-old has performed well for the Owls in the second tier, and did particularly well to keep them in the division at the end of a challenging 2023/24 campaign.

Replacing the former Germany assistant boss would already be a tough act to follow, but Chansiri’s ongoing ownership makes such a task even more difficult.
