Dele Alli: Pundit baffled by Everton after ‘ridiculous’ £40m deal sanctioned

The £40million fee Everton could end up paying Tottenham for Dele Alli is “ridiculous”.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after a busy end to January at Goodison Park.

Alli, 25, joined Everton on deadline day after falling out of favour at Tottenham.

The same day, Sky Sports reported the midfielder could cost Everton up to £40million with the deal structured around performance-based add-ons.

McAvennie can’t believe Spurs demanded such an expensive deal for an out of favour player.

“I think Lampard might be the perfect man to get Alli back to his best,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He was one of the best midfielders in the world when he played, he knows what it takes.

“If Alli gets going again, there is no doubting he will be a brilliant signing. We all know how good he can be.

“That £40million though, how can Tottenham can ask for that. Why did Everton sanction that?

“That’s ridiculous. He hasn’t kicked a ball for two years. I guess if he does well enough to hit those targets then the signing will be worth it.

“Obviously it’s a risk but I think we will see the best of Dele Alli again. He’s needed this move for a long time.”

Alli made 269 appearances during his seven years at Tottenham.
