Derek McInnes to Rangers: ‘The right man at the right time’

Derek McInnes ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ for Rangers should they decide to part ways with Philippe Clement, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that McInnes, 53, has earned plenty of admirers within the Rangers hierarchy for his work at Kilmarnock, despite operating on a limited budget.

A 2-1 defeat to high-flying Aberdeen has left Clement, 50, on the brink of getting sacked as their underwhelming start to the season continues.

Football Insider revealed (November 1) that the Belgian is ‘one game away’ from getting the boot as they prepare to face an in-form Motherwell side in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday (November 3).

The fans are said to be keen on the idea of bringing someone in who has connections to the club, even if it’s not a particularly glamorous appointment.

Derek McInnes favourite to take over from Philippe Clement at Rangers

McInnes, who spent five years at Ibrox from 1995 to 2000, masterminded a last-gasp 1-0 Scottish Premier League victory over Clement and his former club earlier this season.

The Scotsman previously turned down the Rangers job while at Aberdeen but is understood to be more receptive to the idea this time around.

Kilmarnock have had an impressive start to the Scottish Premier League season, sitting in sixth with three wins, three draws, and four defeats from their opening 10 games.

On the other hand, Rangers have struggled, trailing nine points behind Aberdeen and Old Firm rivals Celtic in the title race.
