Derek McInnes would be brilliant next Rangers manager – McAvennie
Rangers should turn to Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes if they decide to sack Philippe Clement following a disappointing start to the season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes the 53-year-old should have got the job ‘a long time ago’ and his knowledge of the club could make him the right man to steady the Rangers ship.
Rangers backed to appoint Derek McInnes as Philippe Clement ‘fights for his job’
McInnes beat Celtic twice last season, securing a 1-0 League Cup victory in August 2023 before getting the better of them again with a 2-1 league win in December.
It’s been a disappointing start to this campaign, however, with his side sitting dead last in the Scottish Premier League with three defeats and one draw.
“Steven Gerrard won’t return”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“Derek McInnes should have got it a long time ago, he’s a decent manager and let’s be honest, if Rangers had money they would be going for someone big.
“I’m not saying Derek would be cheap, he played for the club, he knows the club, he knows it inside out.

“He beat Rangers and he beat Celtic twice last season, he’s a decent manager and he did well at Aberdeen.
“He’s gone toe-to-toe with Rangers a few times so I think he’s got a pedigree and he’s got a format that would help Rangers.”
