Celtic tycoon Dermot Desmond has said that if Arsenal were to come calling for Brendan Rodgers he would not stand in the manager’s way if he wanted to leave.
The Northern Irishman has been installed as the favourite for the Gunners hotseat after Arsene Wenger chose to step down from the position which was announced on Friday.
There has been previous speculation suggesting that if the Frenchman were to quit the Emirates the Celtic boss would have been in line for the position, and so it would seem.
Speaking to Sky Sports news Desmond said: “I’m glad that he’s the favourite because he deserves to be the favourite.
“He’s an outstanding person and we wouldn’t like him to leave.
“But we can’t force anybody to stay and hopefully his love for the club, and the setup there, will induce him to stay at Celtic.”
And when asked whether that meant he wouldn’t stop Rodgers’ from holding talks with the North London giants, he replied: “Absolutely.
“I don’t think you can put handcuffs on anybody if they want to go to a club as good as Arsenal.
“But it’ll be Brendan’s decision and Brendan’s decision only.”
Football Insider verdict:
Rodgers has been a faithful servant to the Scottish Premiership and taken them to the verge of their second treble but the Arsenal job is a step-up from the Scottish league and there is no way if the Gunners came calling that he would turn the opportunity down – Dermot knows that and as such has cleared the path for it to happen. Former Hoops attacker Charlie Nicholas has already said that the Northern Irishman would be a perfect fit for the Gunners as it looks to be a potential appointment that appears to be gaining momentum.
