Diego Carlos bids farewell to Aston Villa fans as new signing lined up

Diego Carlos took to social media to thank Aston Villa fans for their “unconditional love and support” after signing for Fenerbahce.

The 31-year-old joined Jose Mourinho’s side for a reported £8.45million, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Turkish giants.

Carlos, who is currently sidelined with a foot injury, had been a fairly consistent player for Unai Emery before the move, starting 14 of his 17 games across all competitions, and providing zero goal contributions in his 1403 minutes of action.

The Brazilian’s Villa career was marred by injury issues, notably rupturing his Achilles in just his third game at the club back in 2022, ruling him out for 214 days.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa are looking to replace Carlos with Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade as they seek to overhaul their aging backline.

Fenerbahce currently sit second in the Turkish Super Lig, six points off league leaders and arch-rivals Galatasaray in the race for the title.

Grateful for his time at the club, Carlos took to Instagram to say his goodbyes, writing: “I would like to thank Aston Villa, all the coaches, staff, team-mates and club workers who have been with me during this special time.

I would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Aston Villa fans for their unconditional love and support. I wish the club and everyone who has been part of this unforgettable journey all the best. UP THE VILLAAAAAAAA!!

It remains unclear exactly when Carlos will make his Fenerbahce debut, but he is expected to make his return from injury in early February.

Villa will host West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday (January 26) as they seek to gain further ground on the Champions League qualification spots.
