Diogo Jota: Liverpool star could have just ended teammate's Anfield career - pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Diogo Jota’s form could spell the end of Roberto Firmino’s Liverpool career.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the 25-year-old offers more “end product” than the Brazilian when playing through the middle.
Operating on the right-hand flank, Jota scored both goals in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Leicester City on Thursday (10 February).
With Mo Salah benched and Sadio Mane absent, Firmino led the line against the Foxes, with Jota and Luis Diaz out wide.
However, Whelan suggested the Portuguese star’s red-hot form could spell the end of the Brazilian in the long term.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They got the job done. Jota is absolutely on fire, isn’t he?

“He’s really stepped up to the plate while Mane and Salah have been away. Jota’s made himself the main man right now and he’s continuing to do so.
“He’s taking a little bit of pressure of Mane and Salah and making the decision not to play them very easy because of the form that he’s in.
“It looks very exciting. Whether Firmino keeps his place and whether he’s still at Liverpool come the end of the season…
“When you’ve got Jota who can play that position but gives you more of an end product in terms of goals and assists, you’ve then got to wonder if it’s the end for Firmino.
“It looks to me like they’re trying to freshen things up with younger players coming in.
“Can you free up some money to bring in a bit more youth for that next generation of Liverpool stars?”
Firmino, 30, has scored seven times in 22 appearances this season.
Meanwhile, Jota has netted 27 goals in 30 games for Liverpool.
